52 Ancestors-52 Weeks #16 Sarah White Lily

Sarah White Lily, daughter of Edmund Fleming Lily Sr and Elizabeth Billingsley, was my third great grandmother. Sarah was born in North Carolina 5 October 1803, married Walter Pharr (Far) Burns in 1827, and died in Anson County North Carolina 5 November 1895.

52 Ancestors-52 Weeks #15–Nancy Dial

 

Nancy Dial is my 2nd great grandmother. She was born in 1813 in South Carolina and died in 1910 in Richland County South Carolina. I have not found her parents at this time.

She married James Brazell, son of John Brazell and Martha Parnold. They were the parents of seven children:

- William “Willie” Brazell 1855-1905
- John Brazell 1856-1952
- George Thomas Brazell 1858-1928
- James Henry Brazell 1856-1956
- John Randolph Brazell 1863-1952
- Charlotte Brazell 1866-1944
- Daniel Brazell born 1868

Nancy lived next door to Thomas Davis and his wife Mary and to William Brazell and his wife Mary.

I don’t know the date of death for James Brazell, but it appears he died after his son Daniel was born in 1868 and before the census was taken in 1870.

Nancy and her children lived next door to William Brazell and to John J Shirah and his wife Caroline.

Nancy Dial Brazell died in 1910 and is buried in Gibson Cemetery, West Columbia SC.

Nancy Dial Brazell was 79 years old instead of 19 years old when she died.

52 Ancestors-52 Weeks #14-Malachi Harward (Howard)

Malachi Harward, my 3rd great grandfather, was the son of Jacob Myrick Harward and Milea Yates (Yeats). He was born 6 January 1806 in North Carolina and died 13 May 1854 in Anson County North Carolina. He was the fourth child and the third son of Jacob Myrick and Milea.

He married Sarah Pritchard 28 June 1832 in Anson County at the age of 26. His entire life was spent there.

Malachi and Sarah had five children:

- Narcissa Howard 1831-1910 (my 2nd great grandmother)
- Jane Howard born 1833
- James Thomas Howard 1837-1893
- David Mack Howard 1838-1915
- Mary Howard born 1842

Malachi Harward is buried in the Harward Family Graveyard overlooking Rocky River.

I don’t have a lot of sourced information on Malachi, so he is still a work in progress.

Hezekiah Isaiah Wilson, called Uncle Babe by my mother, is my grand uncle. He is the tenth child and the eighth son of Rev Thomas H Wilson and Elizabeth “Betsy” Gulledge. Uncle Babe was born 6 October 1871 in Richland County, South Carolina where he lived all his life.

Rev Thomas Wilson gave each of his children a portion of his land to build a house and rear their family. Hezekiah and Annie Dora lived next door to his parents, Rev Thomas and Elizabeth on one side and on the other side Will Rogers and his wife Dosia.

In 1910 Hezekiah and his family were living on Garners Ferry Road (possibly the same place as in 1900 but different designation on census). He and Annie Dora had 4 children.

Walter Pharr Burns, son of James Burns and Penelope Pharr, was born in North Carolina 15 May 1795 and died 27 July 1864. He married Sarah White Lily, daughter of Edmund Fleming Lily Sr and Elizabeth Billingsley, about 1827. He is my 3rd great grandfather.

William Wiley Parker, fourth child and eldest son of Nicholas Parker and Mary _____, was born in 1796 in Anson County North Carolina and died 6 April 1861. Wiley married Annice (Annis) Broadaway, the daughter of John Broadaway and Leah _____. William Wiley Parker is my 3rd great grandfather.

They lived at the Wiley Parker place near Burnsville, on the road between Burnsville and Oakboro. Later it became known as the Jack Simpson place and, even later, as the William H Curlee place.

52 Ancestors–52 Weeks #10 He Ran Away with the Circus - Carl Benjiman Curlee

 

Carl Benjiman Curlee led a colorful life. He was the son of Obediah Caldwell Curlee and Mary E Blakeney. Carl Benjiman “Zeke” Curlee was born 13 March 1888 in Monroe, Union, North Carolina and died 31 October 1957 in Kileen, Bell, Texas. He packed a lot of living in his 69 years. I will tell his story in pictures, newspaper clippings, and other documents.

Carl Benjiman “Zeke” Curlee died 31 Oct 1957 of acute myocardial infarction. He had also been diagnosed with bronchiogenic carcinoma. He was buried at Rose Hill Cemetery, Corpus Christi Texas.
